I can take it

I don't want this blog to be a completely top-down process where I have the ultimate "truth" about sleep issues. Of course, I think I have something to offer that hasn't been available to most parents (except generations back when we had grandmothers and aunties and neighbors who were all in our new-parent faces about what child-rearing was all about). I wouldn't have written the book with Marc if I didn't think that we really did have a message that wasn't being heard by most parents. But I want to hear what you think. I want to be challenged. I want you to feel comfortable disagreeing with me; fighting me on the fine points as well as the large premises. I think that we'll all understand children's development better, and particularly how it relates to sleep, if we can openly challenge each other.

It takes a whole lot to offend me, so please feel free to tell me when you think I'm full of sh#@.

  1. Hi Isabel,
Having been away from Ask Moxie for a week or so, I just caught up and am thrilled to see your link! I can’t imagine that anyone would think you are full of sh*t, as you are (as Moxie also said) actually engaged in the process yourself, and as such, your ideas are as valid (and more so) than anyone else’s.
As it happens, I would love to buy your book, but can’t as it’s not released in the UK yet. I am the parent of a two year old boy who will NOT go to sleep alone and will not tolerate waking up alone, and it’s starting to become unworkable for me because it’s now taking him up to 3 hours to get to sleep at night. Obviously, I didn’t mind being there with him when it was only taking ten minutes! Just wondering when you think you’ll get to the two year old stage, now that you’ve started with the birth-to-three-months…
I have a feeling you may be saving my life! ;-)

  2. @Ashramama: Thanks for the supportive words! As for your question about when I’ll get to the 2-year old stage, it shouldn’t be too long. I’d say maybe 2 weeks max. As soon as I have a general outline of all the stages, then I won’t be sticking to a chronological order with people’s questions. I just wanted to get the first few questions answered in some order that made some sense in terms of prioritizing them.

  3. I bought your book from Amazon Canada (I am in the US) after reading about it on Ask Moxie. One thing I REALLY like about it is the summary of developmental stages – I want to know this stuff, but don’t necessarily have time just now to read a long book or two devoted to the subject. So far, we have combined your advice on timing with a modified CIO method and paying close attention to the ’90 minute rule’ – it’s working well so far!
